Around the city

Street scenes, shops, vendors and houses from across Washington whose exact spot we could not pin down.

History

Not every photograph comes with an address. The studios’ caption cards often say only “street scene” or name a business without its street, and many neighbourhoods have changed beyond recognition. The photographs gathered here are all from Washington, and are worth seeing for what they show of everyday life, even where we cannot place them on the map.

What's there now

If you recognise one of these places, the Library of Congress welcomes corrections on its catalogue records.

Then and now

These photographs show the ordinary fabric of the city: rowhouses, corner shops, alleys, delivery wagons and street vendors, much of which has been rebuilt since.
