Daily life

Markets, shops, street vendors, schools, sport and snow days: the ordinary city behind the monuments.

The studios that photographed Washington were mostly paid to cover news and to advertise businesses, so ordinary life appears at the edges of their pictures: a delivery wagon, a queue at a market stall, a crowd reading the baseball scores, children on a sledge. This collection gathers those pictures.
