Parades, inaugurations and ceremonies
Inaugurations from Taft to Hoover, funerals and victory marches: the city as a stage.
Pennsylvania Avenue was built for processions, and the photographers of the 1910s and 1920s covered every one: inaugurations every four years, the funerals of presidents and senators, veterans’ reunions, fraternal orders, firemen, schoolchildren, and the great victory parades of 1919. These photographs show the crowds as much as the marchers.
