The cherry trees and the parks

Tokyo's gift of 1912 around the Tidal Basin, and the parks, gardens and riverbanks where the city went to play.

On March 27, 1912, Helen Taft and Viscountess Chinda planted the first two of 3,020 cherry trees given by the city of Tokyo along the Tidal Basin. Within a few years the blossom was drawing crowds every spring. The trees stood in the new parkland of West and East Potomac Park, made from mud dredged out of the river after the floods of the 1880s, where Washingtonians also swam, played polo and golf, and drove along the Speedway.
