Building the monumental city
The Lincoln Memorial rising on the reclaimed flats, new bridges and government buildings, and old blocks coming down.
The McMillan plan of 1902 set out a new monumental core for Washington, and over the next thirty years it was built. These photographs catch it half-finished: the Lincoln Memorial going up on land that had been river a generation before, new bridges across the Potomac, and the old blocks of downtown being cleared for the Federal Triangle.
